Dear All,

On Thursday, May 1st at 16h00 in Lewis 208, Prof. Iliescu will be giving a
talk.

Speaker: Prof. T. Iliescu (Virginia Tech)
http://www.math.vt.edu/people/iliescu/

Title: Reduced Order Modeling of the Quasi-Geostrophic Equations

Abstract:

This talk surveys some recent developments in the modeling, analysis and
numerical simulation of the quasi-geostrophic equations, which describe the
wind-driven large scale ocean circulation.
A large eddy simulation model, which is based on approximate deconvolution,
is proposed for the numerical simulation of the one-layer and two-layer
quasi-geostrophic equations.
A reduced order model based on the proper orthogonal decomposition is also
proposed as an accurate and computationally efficient tool for the
numerical simulation of the quasi-geostrophic equations.
The error analysis for the finite element discretization and the numerical
investigation of the new models are also presented.

Prof. Iliescu will be visiting from Monday 04/28 until Thursday 05/01. If
you would like to meet with him, please contact me.

Best regards,

Ulrich Hetmaniuk
