Hi All,

Our next Boeing Lecture will be next Thursday, May 8 at 4pm in Smith Hall
205 (details below)

Those who are interested in meeting with Dr. Olver, or joining him for
meals, should please sign up on this google docs page (
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M4Ry-NCVzDeOPUAODCEyf3zEptYBJbDkxwlHGZowREc/edit
).
He has availability Thursday May 8 and Friday May 9.

*Peter Olver, University of Minnesota*
*May 8th, 4pm @ Smith Hall 205**Dispersion of Rough Data on Periodic
Domains*

The evolution, through spatially periodic linear dispersion, of piecewise
constant initial data leads to surprising quantized structures at rational
times, and fractal, non-differentiable profiles at irrational times.
Similar phenomena have been observed in optics and quantum mechanics, and
lead to intriguing connections with exponential sums arising in number
theory. Ramifications of these observations for numerics, and extensions
to more general dispersive linear and nonlinear wave models will be
presented and copiously illustrated with movies.
