Director of Research
Oregon State University Foundation

The OSU Foundation is the non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing Oregon State University. The Foundation achieves this mission by raising and managing private gifts that transform OSU's programs beyond what is possible through the state-funded higher education budget. While public funds and tuition maintain the University, private gifts provide an additional margin of excellence through donor-funded scholarships, professorships, program and endowments and other opportunities that provide depth and richness to the OSU experience.

The Opportunity
The Foundation management seeks a Director of Research who is eager to be part of its entrepreneurial team and who views a challenge as an opportunity to build something great.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Development, the Director of Research leads and oversees the prospect identification, prospect management process, and research functions, supervises the research staff, and works closely with development officers as a partner in helping them achieve their fundraising goals.

Specifically, the Director will:

Plan, implement, and monitor the process of identification, research, rating and categorizing of prospective donors to the institution. Lead the research group in prospect identification and research, and oversee quality control of research products. Establish guidelines for products and establish performance goals for researchers.

Exercise full supervision over assigned staff; make appropriate hiring decisions, establish work plans and accountabilities, ensure required training is received, conduct performance evaluations, effectively manage behavioral and conduct issues.

Represent the research department in administrative and leadership meetings; serve as a member of committees at request of Senior Vice President.

Assist with development and use of computerized functions; propose functional and procedural guidelines for the donor prospect tracking system to effect efficient and effective information management and tracking; develop and recommend report formats for prospect and key constituent identification, screening, visits, and tracking.

Provide database system training and support to Development Office staff and institutional advancement personnel across campus.

Inform and clarify research and prospect management procedures and policy for the data entry personnel.

Research and recommend new online commercial and internet resources to support research activities. Review and request appropriate software for data management and reporting.

Coordinate the analysis and implementation of electronic screening and other analytical data.

Order and interpret reports from the database to assist development officers with management of constituent planning and tracking activities.

Provide professional expertise and relevant materials enabling coordinated research planning supporting both University development projects and unit fund raising priorities.

Participate in committees designed to plan and implement change and growth for the overall and central development units.

Advise fund raisers in developing cultivation and solicitation strategies. Assist in identifying volunteers who will participate in cultivation and solicitation. Participate in discussions and contribute to final plans. Contribute planning and research support for donor screening sessions conducted by development officers.

Develop unit goals, policies, and procedures by providing input to the management team regarding how the unit can support overall advancement plans and various fund raising activities. Participate in unit and development staff meetings and carry out assigned tasks resulting from discussions.

Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree and five years experience in advancement/fundraising preferably in prospect research; including three years in a supervisory role using effective and sound supervisory practices. Campaign experience desired. Education and experience equivalencies will be considered.

The successful candidate will have comprehensive knowledge of research methods and private foundations associated with higher education. The successful candidate must be able to express ideas well and communicate clearly and will possess superb organizational and time management abilities. He or she must have a demonstrated ability to work independently and as a self starter in a team-oriented environment, work congenially with staff, administration, faculty, volunteers and others, organize complex materials, manage more than one project at a time, and communicate comfortably in an academic setting. The Director must work with a high degree of flexibility, accuracy and attention to detail in fast-paced environment with numerous deadlines and pressures.
