Prospect Researcher

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Job Description:

Prospect Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center identify
and profile individual, corporate and foundation donors. Researchers
uncover prospects for major gifts, endowed gifts, special project
funding and annual/sustaining support. Prospect Researchers provide
written reports that contain an analysis of information gathered from
public sources.

Researchers are expected to use initiative and sound judgment in
carrying-out related responsibilities within the framework of
Development and FHCRC polices and procedures.

The Prospect Researcher team (five members) performs the following

* Assumes primary responsibility for meeting the prospect
identification and research needs of Development staff, enabling
frontline fundraisers to focus on fundraising goals and other
* Uses both standard and novel prospect research techniques and
tools to identify new prospects and complete donor background requests,
including periodical and electronic screening.
* Reviews local and national news and business publications. Keep
abreast of prospect information, local/regional business developments,
economic trends and cancer developments relevant to Development's work
and FHCRC. Work cooperatively with other researchers to create the
weekly electronic Prospect Research News Digest.
* Meets regularly with Development colleagues. Keep up to date
about activities and initiatives underway in each Development
* Collaborates with Development staff to develop prospect
identification, cultivation, solicitation and overall fundraising
* Helps maintain policies and procedures for the prospect research
* Maintains and develop professional relationships with local
prospect researchers, as well as national and local associations.
* Utilizes central Development database (Raiser's Edge) to
track/store profile data.
* Safeguards the confidentiality of donor information at all
* Adheres to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
* Maintains the professional and ethical standards set forth for
the field by the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement
* Performs other responsibilities as identified by Director of
Development Information Services.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and two-five years of experience in the role of
Prospect Researcher and/or Library Research. Strong written and verbal
communication skills, attention to detail, an aptitude for logical
thinking and a commitment to professional ethics are required. Must have
the ability to interact with Development staff as well as experience
working in non-profit sector. Extensive computer skills, including
proficiency with Microsoft office software, searching on-line databases
and the Internet required. Demonstrated ability to work in a team
environment and meet goals in a timely manner.
