"Over the Hedge" - Understanding Hedge Funds (Replay)

Presented by Michael J. Foote and Joyce Newton

The hedge fund industry has exploded, as have the paychecks of its
millionaire and billionaire managers, creating a new pool of wealthy
donors. How philanthropic are these prospects? This Virtual Seminar will
provide an overview of this complicated financial sector and how it
differs from PE and VC. Seminar topics include basic facts and
terminology, SEC regulations and documents and differences between
traditional (mutual funds et al) and alternative investments (hedge
funds, et al). The presenters share examples to illustrate how a
researcher might evaluate/rate a hedge fund prospect.

Speaker Biographies
Michael J. Foote joined Dartmouth in 2001 and currently serves as the
Director of Research where he oversees a department responsible for
prospect identification in support of the college's current $1.3 billion
campaign. Before entering the nonprofit world, Foote spent five years
with the National Basketball Association, where he directed the league's
research needs. Based in New York, he operated in conjunction with
marketing and media sales groups to target prospective clients and
provided strategic direction for research studies measuring the value of
the NBA domestically and globally. He previously spent several years at
Nielsen Media Research, the television ratings company. Foote is an
undergraduate alumni of St. John's University and received his MBA from
Pace University.

Joyce Newton is a Senior Strategic Analyst at Dartmouth College. Before
entering the development field in 2002, she spent more than 13 years in
the biotechnology industry as an Information Specialist at Millennium
Pharmaceuticals and Chiron Corp. In addition, Newton spent six years as
a Market Research Analyst in the direct marketing field. Her current
research responsibilities include monitoring trends in the financial
services industry as well as evaluating new technologies/resources in
the field of prospect research. She holds a bachelor's degree from the
College of Our Lady of the Elms, is a contributor to
www.supportingadvancement.com, and a founding member of Chase Solutions'
