Please feel free to share this opportunity with students, student organizations, relevant law clinics, career services colleagues, faculty, or anyone else who may be interested. Seed IP is hosting a virtual educational panel for students and early-career professionals who may be curious about career pathways in patent law and intellectual property. Event: Discovering Careers in Patent Law and Intellectual Property Date/Time: October 28th at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Format: Virtual educational panel Audience: Undergraduate, graduate, business, STEM, pre-law, and law students, as well as recent graduates and early-career professionals exploring IP-related pathways This will be a virtual introduction to a stable, specialized career field where law, innovation, technology, brands, creative work, and IP law firm operations intersect. Students do not need prior knowledge of intellectual property or a current plan to attend law school. The discussion will introduce pathways including trademark, copyright, patent prosecution, patent litigation, patent agent roles, technical roles, and IP law firm operations, with practical examples of how students and professionals can begin exploring the field. Message-ID: Happy last few weeks of Summer, Historians! A student can apply to graduate up to three quarters in advance of when they will finish their final requirements. For example, right now is a good time to apply to graduate in Autumn 2026, Winter 2027, or Spring 2027. By applying early, you can get graduating senior priority for registration for your last two quarters. If you intend to complete all your degree requirements and have your degree granted at the end of Autumn 2026, you should have already applied to graduate. But if you were slacking off, we can still accept Autumn 2026 graduation applications up to the end of the third week of Autumn quarter: October 16th. If you intend to complete all your degree requirements and have your degree granted at the end of Winter 2027 or Spring 2027, don't be shy, apply to graduate by the end of the third week of the quarter you intend to graduate. You can set up a "graduation application" appointment by using the tool linked in our contact information below. If you have questions, feel free to reach out. My name is Amanda Regan, and I am Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History and Geography at Clemson, where I also direct our Ph.D. program in Digital History, the first of its kind in the United States. I am writing to share information about the program and to ask that you pass it along to any History and Digital History students at University of Washington who are considering graduate school this year. If you have colleagues who advise students on graduate study, I would be grateful if you forwarded this to them as well. Clemson?s Digital History Ph.D. trains students to be historians fluent in both traditional humanistic inquiry and emerging computational methods. Our curriculum pairs rigorous historical training with hands-on work in digital tools like text mining, GIS, data visualization, and the critical evaluation of AI for things like transcription, computer vision, or text recognition. Students engage deeply with historical questions while also learning to assess the technological, social, and cultural implications of the tools they use. A required internship helps students explore career paths within and beyond academia. All of it is grounded in the belief that history drives the digital, and the digital doesn?t drive the history. We begin with meaningful historical questions and apply digital tools in service of answering them, not the other way around. Students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies while developing dissertations rooted in rich historical research. Students complete a primary field in U.S., World, or European history alongside a thematic concentration field. Our department has particular expertise in the U.S. South, empire and colonialism, women and gender, U.S. and the world, and environmental history. We accept students with either an M.A. or a B.A., and interested students are encouraged to check out our Prospective Students and Frequently Asked Questions webpages, which discuss requirements in more detail. As I am sure you know, the academic job market in the humanities has contracted dramatically in recent years, and the challenges facing our field and higher education aren?t going away. We designed this program with that reality in mind, and we believe it matters even more now given how AI is reshaping higher education, for better or worse. We believe that digital skills are no longer optional. They are essential for historians who want to remain relevant, adaptable, and competitive both inside and outside the academy. We are beginning to see that bear out. The first three students from our program to go on the market have all placed, one in higher education, one in the nonprofit sector, and one in educational administration, and each secured a position before finishing the degree. I also want to mention our M.A. in History, which may suit students who are not ready to commit to a Ph.D. or who would like to strengthen their preparation first. The M.A. offers broad historical study and it builds the research, writing, and analytical skills that serve graduates in teaching, public history, government service, law, archival management, and business, as well as in doctoral study. Historical and critical thinking skills of this kind are increasingly vital in a world of information overload and artificial intelligence. Our M.A. students also benefit from proximity to the Digital History Ph.D. program, which gives them informal opportunities to explore digital methods and computational approaches without committing to them. I would be glad to send more information or to speak with any students who may be considering graduate school, and I am always happy to connect over Zoom. I have attached a brochure for the Ph.D. program, and please feel free to circulate it among your students. We are also running Zoom information sessions this fall, and students can sign up here. Applications for Fall 2027 are due January 15, 2027, and there is no application fee. Thanks in advance for sharing this with your students and colleagues. Have a great semester. The Washington Center (TWC) runs an internship program in Washington, D.C., that is open to all UW undergraduates (all majors welcome) and provides comprehensive service, including internship placement, housing, and career coaching. Placements include government agencies, international organizations, corporations, nonprofits, museums, and arts organizations. Hundreds of UW students have participated in this program since UW's affiliation in 1977, and many made connections that led to post-degree employment. At the information session, a Washington Center representative and Meera Roy, Political Science adviser and UW's liaison to TWC, will discuss the structure of the program, scholarships, and the application process. Students enroll in Pol S 498, The Washington Center Internship, and earn 15 credits graded CR/NC. The program is affordable for many students. Students on financial aid receive their aid. WA State residents receive a scholarship that makes the cost of attending the program comparable to many study abroad programs. Non-residents also receive a scholarship and may pay less for this program than the estimated cost of attending UW for a quarter. Additional scholarships may be available through TWC and UW. TWC's facilities are accessible to students who have disabilities. In addition, their Disability Services Coordinator will assist with accommodation at the internship and programming sites. These are the upcoming program dates: * Spring 2027 Program * Application Deadline: October 8 (this is an extension of the normal deadline for UW students). Click here to start your application. * Virtual Orientation and Program Start: October 15 * Check-in and Check-out for TWC Housing: January 20 and May 1 * Internship Period: January 25 - April 30 (students are away from UW during Winter and Spring Quarters - this schedule works well for students who are ahead in credits) * TWC's Summer 2027 program begins during Spring Quarter and therefore is not available to most students. UW students attending the 14-week Autumn and Spring programs pay the same rate as the 9-week summer program! * Autumn 2027 Program * Application Deadline: April 14 (March 17 for international students) * Virtual Orientation and Program Start: June 3 * Check-in and Check-out for TWC Housing: September 1 and December 11 * Internship Period: September 7 - December 10 Regardless of your major, there is an internship in D.C. for you! This is more than just a student job. Admissions Tour Guides are among the University's most visible student ambassadors, helping shape how thousands of prospective students and families understand the UW and the College of Arts & Sciences. Their stories, experiences and academic perspectives influence how future students imagine themselves here. Why this matters: * Tour Guides shape first impressions. They connect with thousands of prospective students and families each year, helping increase the visibility of the College and its departments. * Student voices influence enrollment decisions. Representation from across Arts & Sciences helps prospective students see the breadth of opportunities and communities available to them. * Tour Guides extend the College's reach. Through campus tours, recruitment events and outreach activities, they help showcase the people and experiences that make Arts & Sciences distinctive. We encourage you and your departments to personally reach out to students who would exceptional representatives and to share this opportunity through your student communication channels.
