It has been said that no single decision ever made by an American president has aroused more discussion and debate than the decision to use the atomic bomb. Kenneth B. Pyle, the Henry M. Jackson Professor of History and Asian Studies of the University of Washington, will discuss the continuing controversy among historians over this decision. Professor Pyle has taught a seminar on this subject for twenty years which has been extremely popular. His is currently completing a book on US-Japan postwar relations.
Since 2007 the Griffith and Patricia Way Lecture has brought prominent leaders in the fields of Japanese art, history, and society to speak at the University of Washington. This series is supported through an endowment established by the generosity of friends and family of the ways to honor this Seattle couple's dedication toward the promotion and preservation of the art and culture of Japan. For more information on how to contribute to supporting this fund, please contact Japan at uw.edu.
