eth hanging on shutdown

Are you trying to keep it from calling pump on startup? It's in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 if it's RedHat; change it from:
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
to
BOOTPROTO=none
..
