nfs locks up

Slightly refining my previous post, now I'd say that I can read over NFS
from the server to the client a file of any length, and I can write a file
of zero to 1,336 bytes. A file of 1,337 bytes or larger causes the NFS
client to hang. Nothing is written on the logs by the server.

I've looked at the newest NFS howto and I've tried diddling with more
server and client options. The problem is slightly alleviated by mounting
"soft" instead of "hard", but nothing really helps very much.

Any NFS gurus out there?
