For those interested: I finally figured out the ssh problem with later
devel kernels. Post-2.5.51, it appears that /dev/pts is required and must
be mounted. Add to fstab:

non /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0

End of problem.

ipsec-tools builds against linux-2.6.0-test4 headers without any of the
hassle I described last time, so I guess that was my punishment for using
a recent tools release with an old devel kernel. Note also that once I
fixed the pts problem in 2.6.0, I had lots of unexplainable setkey
failures until I rebuilt ipsec-tools with the new kernel.

That's it ... problems all solved. No muss, no fuss, and no source
diving.
