Hah! That's nearly as good as the kernel "dazed and confused" message ..

I can't answer your question, but I can offer two comments:

1. I went through this with qmail, and never did figure out how to fix
source and allow the build to complete. One thing I didn't try was
rolling up my modified source and putting it back in
/usr/portage/distfiles, overwriting the downloaded tarball. Portage
should then pull it out of there and use it. Maybe that'll work for
you. Me, I ended up building qmail on my own.

2. Use CUPS, ferkryinoutloud! Forsake the dinosaur that is lprng.
