Only other thing in my murky past which begs a question based on your info
is that we did find weird stuff like this with some kernels and compiler
versions; it was bad enough at one point that we simply couldn't keep
LDAP running on current Red Hat (which at the time was using an early 2.4
kernel and that infamous gcc "2.96") and had to switch it to Deb, where it
performed fine. Can you correlate the onset of your troubles with kernel,
library, or gcc update? Have you tried these packages on a more
conservative distro like Deb?
