People in these mailing lists should note that, tomorrow and Friday,
the noted philosopher of science Elliott Sober will be visiting the
Department of Biology and the Department of Philosophy. Elliott has
given more attention to phylogeny methods than any other philosopher
(and he and I even wrote a joint paper debating each other). He has
also worked on levels of selection and similar issues in evolutionary

He is giving one lecture in each department:

He will be speaking on "Darwin's Phylogenetic Reasoning" in the
Biology Department in Hitchcock 132 from 12-1pm on Thursday April 27th
(Hosted by Carl Bergstrom). There will be a class in that room before
then, so please be courteous and do not enter Hitchcock 132 until
after 11:50.

Dr. Sober will also be speaking on "Ockham’s Razor – When is the
Simpler Theory Better?" to the Philosophy department on Friday, April
28th from 3:30-5:30pm in Savery 264

Unfortunately, the first lecture, to the Biology Department, is a
perfect conflict with Mary-Claire King's Science in Medicine Lecture

The flyers for both of these talks are attached below. Thanks to
Davis Chong of the Bio Department whose email notice I have modified
to make this one.
