WPSR's Economic Inequity & Health Task Force invites you to ?Homelessness or Health?? a free virtual event to explore the factors that lead to homelessness in Washington state, and how healthcare professionals can engage more deeply in issues that connect homelessness and health. Hear from speakers with real-life experiences of homelessness, and learn the strategies and actions we all need to take in the upcoming legislative session to pass policies that end homelessness. [https://prod.cdn.everyaction.com/images/van/PSR/PSR/1/84333/images/Copy%20of%20GBI%20Panel_6.30_%20Draft%20%28Registration%29.png] [secure.everyaction.com] Speakers: * Robert DeGregorio, second-year medical student, will share the history of, and factors contributing to the present-day homelessness crisis in Washington State, as well as share his own powerful lived experience. * Po Leapai, Advocacy Organizer for the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance, will share his personal story, explain his coalition?s work to end homelessness, and review the legislation we need to pass this upcoming legislative session. This is event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. [secure.everyaction.com] ________________________________ Did you know that WPSR was the first and is the only PSR chapter to develop an advocacy program dedicated to addressing the health impacts of economic and racial inequity? WPSR is committed to this work because we know that economic inequity makes us sick. Research over the last four decades has shown that more equal societies have lower mortality rates [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov], longer lives [jamanetwork.com], and greater well-being [law.nyu.edu]. We know that the health consequences of economic inequity are long-lasting and continue throughout a lifetime: according to a new study [eurekalert.org] published in Social Science & Medicine, childhood income inequality is associated with declining adult health and increased risk of chronic illness. We also know - as the severe exacerbation of racial inequities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic [epi.org] has illustrated - the health consequences of economic inequity have deep ties to structural racism. In WPSR's Economic Inequity & Health program [wpsr.org], WPSR health advocates work to improve health and address economic and racial injustice in Washington through our two core issue areas: progressive taxation, and preventing and ending homelessness. ________________________________ [https://prod.cdn.everyaction.com/images/van/PSR/PSR/1/84333/images/General%20EIH%20email%20graphic%20%28600%20%C3%97%2060%20px%29%20%282%29.png] Ending Homelessness Homelessness is a health issue: over 70% of people who are chronically homeless struggle with health conditions like mental illness, substance use disorders, and significant physical disabilities. Homelessness can cause extreme physical and emotional trauma, and is a risk factor for many chronic illnesses. Care for chronically homeless populations must include access to stable housing. WPSR advocates for policies that get and keep people housed, including tenant protections, investments in affordable housing and rental assistance funds, and more. It?s timely to stress that The Political Compass has been on the internet since 2001. The uniqueness of our take on politics is reflected in the gratifyingly enthusiastic reviews we?ve enjoyed in the national media of many countries from our earliest years ? as well as from many teachers and academics who continue to use our work. ... www.politicalcompass.org ________________________________ From: Social Determinants of Health on behalf of Dennis Raphael Sent: November 17, 2022 1:03 PM To: SDOH@YORKU.CA Subject: Re: [SDOH] Ends and Means, Left Right and Centre Left-socialist- Left Party in Sweden [usually former Communist Parties] Centre-Left- Social democratic parties. Are there any academic papers, or popular press, or gray literature writings that would help me to understand the characteristics of each group? Do the terms relate to the goals of each group or to the means they suggest to achieve those goals. My experience is that the terms are used to make ad hominem rejections of various economic or social positions and avoid discussing the issues.
