Hi Colleagues,
Here is another very good resource for the left-right conundrum.
I think the framing of 'libertarian' can be problemaized; however, the compass is an excellent resource. I use it with every class I teach.

Check out where all the political parties are located, Canada and globally. Great context. Take the test!

all the best,
Elizabeth

Welcome! It’s timely to stress that The Political Compass has been on the internet since 2001. The uniqueness of our take on politics is reflected in the gratifyingly enthusiastic reviews we’ve enjoyed in the national media of many countries from our earliest years — as well as from many teachers and academics who continue to use our work. ...

I'm having difficulty defining the operational characteristics of left-right-centre parties.

Are there any academic papers, or popular press, or gray literature writings that would help me to understand the characteristics of each group? Do the terms relate to the goals of each group or to the means they suggest to achieve those goals.

My experience is that the terms are used to make ad hominem rejections of various economic or social positions and avoid discussing the issues.

Thanks
David Zitner

BTW. The Liberal Party of Canada and the Democratic Party in the USA are NOT left centre parties.
