Mangels Endowed Lecturer this year as part of the UW Graduate School's Public Lecture series, on October 18, 2022 at 7:30 pm in Kane 120. "RECKONING WITH RACE: FLUIDITY, INVENTION, AND 'REALITY'" The notion of race as a social construct, rather than an objective physical reality, has increasingly made inroads in the United States in recent years. Yet even in quarters where it seems most widely accepted and familiar, it has hit roadblocks. After a brief introduction to the idea of race as socially constructed, I will describe and dissect three areas in which it seems to have been difficult to apply: genetic and biomedical research; debates about "transracial" identities; and sports. These positions are situated in the Program for Writing Across Campus (formerly known as the Interdisciplinary Writing Program), and will have an anticipated start date of September 2023. These are full-time, 9-month, 3-year renewable (promotion eligible but not tenure-track) positions. (Renewal length increases with promotion.) The Catalyst Fellowship in social science supports early-career researchers to study social aspects of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory?s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) for up to three years. Prospective applicants may be interested in, for example, the social organization of large-scale collaborations, broader implications of astronomical science, and methods for studying socio-technical systems.
