Reaching out to inform you of an opportunity to work on a Tri-campus-wide plan for solar energy development. We have gathered all of the data over the years that forecast solar potential for every building and parking lot or structure on every campus, and have rough draft of text and complementary figures to comprise a plan. We need GIS support to complete data visualizations that fit the purposes of the plan and some InDesign experience to then create the final product. This would be an informal commitment of one or two quarters- please email janwhit@uw.edu if you'd be interested! We want to gauge interest on which labs/people would be interested in using this equipment for teaching or research. The highlights of the proposal are the following: - 2x DJI Mavic 3E + RTK module - DJI Matrice 300 + RTK module - Flir Vue TZ20 R thermal+RGB camera - Zenmuse L1 LiDAR+RGB camera Accessories for thermal control points (aluminum sheeting, thermocouples, etc.) and software are included. The equipment would be housed in RSGAL, but available to students for general use. If this sounds like something you want to see happen, *please send me your name, your lab (if relevant), and a brief description of what you want to do with these sensors. *We will include these in the proposal to demonstrate interest. Drop me a line if you have any questions or want to talk more. Would students be required to obtain a drone pilot license? I took a GSA class on drones for geology, and the instructor indicated expensive SW is required to program drones to do mapping. Is this interface SW part of the plan? I would like to see these drones for ESS classes/labs - ESS 421, ESS 520, ESS 422, and other ESS Geology classes/projects (such as Geology Field Camp). I'll expand more on possible uses in a follow up email. I believe I still have the class notes from the 2020 class on Drones in Geology. I'll see what SW is suggested for drone mapping. I copied some of the ESS staff and a graduate student who has used drones. They may have some additional input.
