The COVID-19 pandemic further motivated human activities in virtual space (e.g., zoom meetings, online shopping, online teaching, telehealth, etc.) and modified human activities in physical space. These changes in virtual space and in physical space often are intertwined with each other that create a hybrid physical-virtual world. Furthermore, changes taking place in this hybrid physical-virtual world have significant implications to major challenges facing human societies such as climate change, sustainable development, public health, social justice, among others. Are Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) ready to address these changes and challenges in today's hybrid physical-virtual world? This special issue welcomes contributions that cover conceptual/theoretical, technological/methodological, or educational/social aspects of making GIScience/GIS useful and relevant in today?s increasingly hybrid physical-virtual world. The scope of this special issue includes, but not limited to, topics such as: - Concepts of physical space, virtual space, hybrid physical-virtual space and their relevance to GIScience/GIS - Representations of physical space, virtual space and hybrid physical-virtual space in GIScience/GIS - Analysis and visualization of interactions between physical space and virtual space - Changes needed in GIScience/GIS education as we move GIS beyond the traditional focus on locations in physical space - Social implications as GIScience/GIS are used to support studies involving human activities in a hybrid physical-virtual space *Timeline and Submission Procedure:* - Abstract submission deadline: August 31, 2023 - Full manuscript submission deadline: December 31, 2023 We welcome submissions from scholars in all relevant fields. Interested authors should first submit a short abstract (300 words max) to Shih-Lung Shaw (sshaw@utk.edu) and Dan Sui (dsui20@vt.edu) by August 31, 2023 for a review of its fit to the theme of this special issue. Suitable abstracts will be invited to submit full manuscripts although the invitation does not guarantee acceptance to the SI. Full manuscripts, including all supporting materials, should be submitted using the journal's submission portal by December 31, 2023, and the authors should specify this SI as the target during their submission. Author guidelines for manuscript preparation and submission are available at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/14679671/homepage/forauthors.html . Papers will be published online shortly after a manuscript is accepted for publication in this special issue. ================ Shih-Lung Shaw Past President, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) Chancellor?s Professor and Sally and Alvin Beaman Professor Department of Geography and Sustainability University of Tennessee Knoxville, TN 37996 USA Email: sshaw@utk.edu -- Bo Zhao (he/him) Associate Professor in Geography University of Washington - Seattle Smith Hall 412e, Box 353550 (206) 685-3846 | hgis.uw.edu Request an appointment *The University of Washington acknowledges the Coast **Salish people of this land, the land which touches the **shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suqua**mish, Tulalip, and Muckleshoot nations.* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Aims: The urban digital twin (UDT) is a nascent technology that results from the amalgamation of developments in computer science, engineering, and urban science. UDT provides a powerful platform for urban planning research and education, supported by fine-resolution visualization, data integration, collaboration, and innovation. The defining characteristics of UDT include human factors, decision-making, and sustainability. This special issue aims to examine the synergies between geo-design, UDT technology, and ethics in the development of sustainable cities. By integrating geo-design and UDT, a more collaborative and inclusive urban planning can be achieved, taking diverse stakeholder interests and perspectives into account. However, uncertainty can stem from the inaccuracy or incompleteness of geospatial urban data and the effectiveness of geo-design interventions in achieving desired outcomes. It can also arise from the diverse and competing interests of different stakeholders. This issue will examine the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating geo-design and UDT technologies in an ethical manner, highlighting best practices, case studies, and research directions that support ethical geo-design. This issue aims to provide a platform for discussion, exploration, and knowledge-sharing for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in the intersection of geo-design, UDT technology, and ethics in sustainable urban development. Scope: This special issue will invite submissions of original research, review articles, and case studies that address one or more of the following topics or other relevant issues: - Accuracy and uncertainty of UDT - Bias and fairness in the UDT and geo-design process - Data quality, location privacy, and security in UDT and geo-design - Ethical frameworks of integrating geo-design and UDT in urban planning - Digital Earth and UDT - Generative AI for urban planning and design - Geo-design and UDT for equitable, sustainable, and resilient urban development - Geospatial data in ethical geo-design and UDT - Governance and policy for ethical geo-design and UDT - Immersive technologies for ethical geo-design - Interactions of UDTs across places and scales - Spatial decision making and Human-UDT interaction - Spatial simulation - Stakeholder integration in geo-design and UDT The special issue provides a platform for sharing experiences, insights, discoveries, and challenges related to ethical geo-design in the urban digital twin era. The goal is to encourage a more participatory and cooperative approach to urban planning and design, emphasizing ethical considerations and promoting sustainable urban development. The special issue targets researchers, practitioners, and policymakers alike. Submission procedure: Interested authors should notify the guest editors of their intention to submit a paper contribution by sending the title and a 500-word abstract to Dr. Xinyue Ye (xinyue.ye@tamu.edu) and Dr. Michael Goodchild ( good@geog.ucsb.edu) by July 15, 2023. The deadline for submissions of the full papers is October 31, 2023. A condition of submission and acceptance is that papers must pass the normal JPER review process. For author instructions, please refer to "Manuscript Submission Guidelines " at the JPER journal homepage. All manuscripts, including support materials, must be submitted using the journal's online Manuscript Central site. Please indicate this special issue as the target issue in the submission process. First-time users of the Manuscript Central site must register themselves as an Author. For questions, please contact Xinyue Ye (xinyue.ye@tamu.edu ).
